    BIOL-1000 is the first in a four-course core sequence for biology majors. Introduction to Cell Biology with Lab is an intensive examination of fundamental concepts of modern cell biology, including cell structure and physiology, molecular biology, and genetics. The laboratory introduces basic instrumentation and experimental strategies used to study modern biological concepts at a cellular level.

    BIOL-1020 is an introduction to morphology, physiology, and evolutionary relationships among invertebrate and vertebrate animals. The laboratory includes a survey of animal diversity, histology, and anatomy.

    4 Semester Hours
    BIOL-1660 provides a concentrated introduction to the biology of human beings. Emphasis on the structure and function of the human body, its organ systems. The course consists of three hours of lecture and three hours of anatomy/physiology laboratory per week. Credit for Biology majors will be given only by written consent of the department chairman. Credit in Biology will not be awarded for both Human Biology and BIOL 1020 - General Zoology W/ Lab  .

  
  • BIOL 1730 - Exploring the Natural World with Lab

    BIOL-1730 is an introduction to science and the methods of science for students who are not planning to major in the sciences, but are interested in learning more about the plants, animals, and other organisms around us, including their ecology, evolution, and relationships with people. Issues of global importance regarding the conservation of biodiversity are investigated using local examples as case studies. BIOL-1730 does not fulfill requirements for B.S. degree or for a major or minor in biology.

    4 Semester Hours
    Biogeography of the American Southwest is a field course involving travel to the southwestern United States that explores the geology, climate, and biodiversity of the American Southwest.  Emphasis is placed on the formation of arid lands and forested “sky islands”, ecology and evolution of desert-adapted organisms, the role of plate tectonics and climate change in promoting population divergence, and the conservation of desert biodiversity. Summer travel and camping are required for this course.

    BIOL-3230 is a field course involving travel to the southwestern United States to study the morphology, ecology, and medical importance of arachnids (spiders, scorpions, and
    kin).  Emphasis is placed on the collection, identification, and behavior of species. Summer travel and camping are required.

  • BIOL 3300 - Molecular Cell Biology W Lab


    4 Semester Hours
    BIOL-3300 provides an in-depth study of the molecular principles by which eukaryotic cells function, with emphasis on membrane structure/function, signal transduction,
    cytoskeleton, and the cell cycle. The lab is a research-based course focused on the development and analysis of genetically modified microorganisms (bacterial, fungal, or protozoan) and the effects of these modifications. Techniques include microorganism culture, PCR, cloning, Southern and western blotting, light and fluorescence microscopy, and database analysis.

    BIOL-3310 examines the evolution, form and function, behavior, life history, ecology, and conservation of the class Aves, the birds. Techniques for the study of birds are taught in laboratory and field settings.

    4 Semester Hours
    BIOL-3320 examines the evolution, functional morphology, ecology, conservation, and medical importance of terrestrial arthropods (arachnids, myriapods, and insects). Collection and identification of local fauna are stressed in the laboratory. Weekend-long fieldtrip is required as a component of the class.

  • BIOL 3350 - Conservation Biology with Lab


    4 Semester Hours
    BIOL-3350 deals with the application of ecological, behavioral, and genetic principles related to conservation problems, particularly the prevention of species extinctions.  Specific topics to be discussed include global diversity patterns and processes, demographic processes, genetic constraints on population viability, the importance of keystone species and disturbance regimes, invasive species biology, the design of conservation reserves, and ecological restoration.  The course includes a laboratory component.

    BIOL-3370 exlores the life history, ecology, taxonomy, and conservation of reptiles and amphibians. Lab and field trips emphasize study techniques and the identification of herpetofauna in Mississippi in the southeastern United States.

  • BIOL 3380 - Wetland Ecology with Lab: Principles and Conservation


    4 Semester Hours
    BIOL-3380 examines the physical and ecological processes of freshwater and estaurine wetlands. Emphasis is on natural wetlands, wetland plants and wildlife, and conservation, restoration, and management of wetlands. The course includes a laboratory with outdoor field trips.

    BIOL-3420 is an examination of human reproductive biology and includes development of the male and female reproductive tracts, reproductive health issues(contraception, infertility, sexually transmitted diseases, and reproductive aging) and the social impact of reproduction on behavior and society.

    BIOL-3430 is an in-depth study of the process by which single cells develop into complex multicellular organisms. Emphasis is on the developmental, cellular, and molecular mechanisms of fertilization, specification, morphogenesis, and axis formation.

    BIOL-3440 is an integrated study of the anatomy and physiology of vertebrates with special emphasis on human biology.  The course includes a laboratory. BIOL-3440 is the first in a two-semester sequence. This course covers the integumentary, skeletal, muscular, nervous, and sensory systems.

    BIOL-3450 is an integrated study of the anatomy and physiology of vertebrates with special emphasis on human biology. The course includes a laboratory. BIOL-3450 is the second in a two-semester sequence. The course covers the cardiovascular, lymphatic, respiratory, digestive, endocrine, and urinary systems.

    BIOL-3460 is the study of physiological responses and adaptions made in response to the challenge of exercise with an emphasis on cardiovascular and neuromuscular systems.

    BIOL-3510 provides an introduction to the physiology, biochemistry, and genetics of the human immune response. The course includes discussion of the immune response when faced with various challenges, including infection and cancer.

    BIOL-3620 provides an in depth study of the evidence for - and mechanisms of - biological evolution, including the use of phylogenies for testing evolutionary and taxonomic hypotheses. In addition to local field trips, the laboratory focuses on problem-solving, use of basic bioinformatics tools and discussion of the current primary literature.
