American Sign Language

  
  • AMSL 1000 - American Sign Language & Deaf Culture I


    4 Semester Hours
    AMSL-1000 provides a study of the deaf community and beginning American Sign Language (ASL) skills. The course introduces students to various sign methods, the linguistic structure of ASL, the experiences of deaf people throughout history, and the impact and importance of ASL and deaf culture.

  
  • AMSL 1010 - American Sign Language and Deaf Culture II


    4 Semester Hours
    AMSL-1010 builds on the skills learned in AMSL 1000   to improve communication and awareness of the Deaf community and culture. More emphasis is placed on language production and spontaneous communication. Field experiences at the MS School for the Deaf, supervised by AMSL-1010 faculty, enhances students’ abilities for effective communication.

    4 Semester Hours
    AMSL-2000 builds on skils learned in AMSL 1010 , with emphasis on increasing receptive and expressive fluency. Students engage with multiple genres of American Sign Language (ASL) literature as well as scholarship on ASL linguistics and on Deaf culture. The course introduces issues related to the fields of interpreting and Deaf education, and provides training/practice for signing in a range of specific contexts. The class includes immersion of field experiences at MS School for the Deaf.
